About the Educator:
Doris Rice
Cactus Quilt Queen Co.
Growing up in the rural Midwest town of Nevada, Missouri, Doris began learning how to sew at the age of seven for 4-H projects. Her skill set quickly flourished and she began sewing and tailoring clothes for friends and family. After becoming employed by a local fabric store, Doris discovered an affection for quilting and soon began offering technique classes and workshops.
Doris purchased her first longarm quilting machine in 1990, and her skillfulness grew to include stunning precision and complexity in her custom and edge-to-edge quilting. Taking a brief hiatus to raise young children and scrapbook, Doris re-entered the quilting industry in 2008 when she purchased her second longarm quilting machine, and her
passion for quilting was reignited.
Fondly known as the Quilting Queen, Doris extended her business to include pattern design in addition to her highly sought-after custom quilting services. She went on to purchase a property in Texas Hill Country that would be transformed into the Queen’s Rustic Retreat, a full service destination retreat center that accommodates up to 20 guests who wish to stay and unwind as they quilt, scrapbook, knit or craft.
In 2017, Doris expanded her quilting enterprise to become owner of X-Blocks rulers and templates, an innovative rotary and cutting tool that allows users of any skill level to create a multitude of intricate designs and patterns. Her dream of one day owning herown brick and mortar quilt shop finally came to fruition when in 2018, she opened Cactus Queen Quilt Co, a full-service retail quilt shop, offering fabric, patterns and notions.
Doris now travels nationally to guild meetings, quilt shows, and quilt shops conducting workshops or demonstrating her X-Blocks template techniques. Doris lives in McQueeney, Texas where she runs Cactus Queen Quilt Co and the Queen’s Rustic Retreat with her husband, Gregg, and son, William. To satisfy he creative outlets, Doris continues to design, piece, and quilt custom quilts that later become treasured works of art.

About the Ship:
Adventure of the Seas debuted in 2001 as the third in the series of Royal Caribbean’s game-changing Voyager-class vessels. Though Adventure has been bypassed in size and amenities by the Freedom-class trio and the massive Oasis-class twins, it’s still among the world’s larger ships, with a range of the most uncruise-like venues at sea, such as a rollerblading track, ice-skating rink and rock-climbing wall — not to mention the bustling hub that is Royal Promenade, a shopping mall-esque boulevard of retail stores, bars and cafes.
Ambience variety is key. The Lyric Theater has a nifty Art Nouveau interior; the solarium pool evokes the glories of Venice; and the Casino Royal centers on a Hollywood theme. The Duck and Dog Pub is perfect for Anglo-philes, Champagne Bar is elegant and Jester’s Nightclub resonates with a Gothic vibe.
This ship is so well designed — with lots of very distinctly themed rooms and with even the larger venues like the Lyric Theater and Imperial Lounge feeling unexpectedly cozy — that Adventure of the Seas has the potential to spoil first-timers and even seduce some of us crusty ol’ cruise traditionalists.
